A Medicare Supplement plan helps fill the gaps in Original Medicare.

Original Medicare doesn’t cover all health care expenses, so you can also buy a Medicare Supplement (or Medigap) insurance plan with different cost and benefit structures. Medicare Supplement plans help fill the gaps in Original Medicare by covering some or all of the out-of-pocket costs, including coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles.

Additionally, these plans offer:

  • The freedom to choose any doctor who accepts Medicare with no network restrictions
  • The ability to see specialists without a referral
  • Nationwide medical coverage, so you're protected when you travel in the U.S.
  • Coverage for certain preventive care services, to help you stay healthy

To be eligible for a Medigap plan, you must be:

At least age 65 (or under age 65 with a disability or end-stage renal disease)

Enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B

Medicare Supplement plan costs

In paying for many healthcare items and services, Medicare Supplement plans share the cost of care through deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. The cost varies by plan.

Medicare Supplement plan costs include:

  • Deductible: The amount you pay before Florida Blue begins to pay its share of the cost.
  • Copay: A flat dollar amount (for example, $10) you pay each time you receive care.
  • Coinsurance: A percentage (for example, 10%) you pay for your care after you meet your deductible.
  • Premium: A fixed, monthly amount you pay for your Medicare supplement plan coverage.

Since Medigap plans do not cover prescription drugs, you may want to consider pairing this plan with a Medicare Part D plan.

Medicare drug coverage helps pay for prescription drugs you need. It's optional and offered to everyone with Medicare. Even if you don’t take prescription drugs now, consider getting Medicare drug coverage. If you decide not to get it when you’re first eligible, and you don’t have other creditable prescription drug coverage (like drug coverage from an employer or union) or get Extra Help, you’ll likely pay a late enrollment penalty if you join a plan later.

Generally, you’ll pay this penalty for as long as you have Medicare drug coverage. To get Medicare drug coverage, you must join a Medicare-approved plan that offers drug coverage. Each plan can vary in cost and specific drugs covered.

BlueMedicare Supplement Select policies do require you to use in-network hospitals.
